Paradise – Straight to the tip of AUS
13-15 August 2019
Continuing on our Lap of Australia on Paradise – We pushed to the tip of mainland Australia in one long day. Leaving Cape Grenville at 0400hrs and arriving at Shallow Bay just before the top of Cape York before sunset at 1800hrs. It was only the two of us on Paradise, and it was the first time that John had a little sleep during the day, and I was at the helm, it's nice to see him relaxed.
We officially became part of a group of seven Cats sailing into the Gulf and to the Wessel Islands, and the name of our flotilla is the Wessel Vessels. I mentioned before that we have enjoyed slowing down and being with and sailing with other boaties. We have learned that it's not all about the destination but rather the journey and that we don't always need to stick to a plan.
Surprisingly the northernmost tip of mainland Australia is actually a tip! We did what the tourists do and took our photo with the small plaque. There were lots of smiles all around as this was a massive milestone for us. We've owned a sailing boat for two years and four months and made it to the top of Australia. More than 95% of boats hardly get used, that's a staggering number, and it's such a waste.
A big thank you to Neil Driscoll of Above and Beyond Boating, our sailing mentor, who continually encourages his clients to go out of their comfort zone and use their boats. The only way to do it is to give it a go and we are certainly doing that.
Our next stop is Horn & Thursday Islands in the Torres Strait.
