Lizard Island FNQ Part 1
17 Jul 2019
Arriving at Lizard Island, we were blown away by the colour of the water; it is a brilliant turquoise colour. There's no wonder there were so many other boats when we anchored. We arrived just in time to head off across the island to the Research Station and Laboratory. Marlene and Paul of Thirsty Dog arranged a private tour; luckily we were able to tag along. One of the Directors Lyle Vail gave us a detailed explanation of the history of the research station and the research that is conducted there; what a fantastic person he is and I can see why he was honoured with an Order of Australia. Lyle was so generous with his time and very passionate about the work that they do at the Barrier Reef. It was nice to be in a lab environment where the researchers are free to walk around barefoot. It was fantastic to see that the Research Station host many students and give a chance for the students to view the marine ecology first hand and the ongoing work to protect the reef. Perhaps even to inspire the students to choose a career in the sciences.
The Marlin Bar is open three nights per week for staff and boaties; I could get used to the life there….. a relaxed atmosphere with great conversations, simple but delicious food and colourful sunsets.
